ServiceNow Certified System Administrator (CSA) Certification
Passing the ServiceNow Certified System Administrator exam demonstrates that a candidate has the knowledge and skills to contribute to the configuration, implementation, and maintenance of a ServiceNow instance. Specifically, it validates the ability to:
- Navigate the platform and configure applications.
- Manage the configuration, implementation, and maintenance of a ServiceNow instance.
- Handle data migration, integrations, and customizations that support scalable ServiceNow operations.
As a foundational certification, CSA is also a prerequisite for advanced certifications like Certified Implementation Specialist (CIS) tracks, Certified Application Developer (CAD), and Certified Technical Architect (CTA).
Prerequisites and Recommended Experience
ServiceNow doesn't list a strict formal prerequisite for sitting the CSA exam, but in practice, completing the required training modules through ServiceNow University is necessary to become eligible for the exam. That training is the ServiceNow Fundamentals course, available as instructor-led training or on-demand through ServiceNow University.
Beyond the training itself, ServiceNow recommends candidates have:
- Three to six months of hands-on experience using or maintaining a ServiceNow instance.
- Some familiarity with database concepts and general system administration.
- Basic knowledge of IT Help Desk processes and core ITIL workflows — Incident, Problem, and Change.
None of this hands-on experience is formally verified before you can register — it's ServiceNow's recommendation for realistic exam readiness, not a gate that blocks registration.
Exam Format
The CSA exam consists of 60 questions to be completed in 90 minutes, made up of two question types:
- Multiple Choice — one correct answer from at least four options.
- Multiple Select — several correct answers from at least four options, with the question specifying how many to select.
Exam questions are drawn from official ServiceNow training materials, the ServiceNow documentation site, and the ServiceNow developer site. ServiceNow is explicit that third-party study materials outside these official sources shouldn't be relied on to prepare — worth keeping in mind given how much unofficial CSA prep content exists online.
Syllabus and Preparation
Review the current CSA Mainline Exam Blueprint, available through the ServiceNow University Knowledge Portal (search "Certified System Administrator Exam Blueprint" within ServiceNow University if the direct link has moved — exam blueprint URLs get restructured periodically as the training platform evolves). The blueprint breaks the exam into Learning Domains with specific weightings, giving a much clearer preparation roadmap than guessing at scope from the course material alone.
Registration and Exam Delivery — What's Changed
This is the part most likely to be out of date if you're reading older guidance: ServiceNow certification exams are no longer delivered through Kryterion or Webassessor. As of November 2025, all registration, scheduling, and delivery moved to Pearson VUE, accessed directly through your ServiceNow University account via single sign-on — no separate Pearson VUE account needed.
Two ways to sit the exam are available:
- OnVUE (online proctored) — take the exam remotely from home or office. Pearson's current requirements are more flexible about equipment than the old Kryterion setup; check Pearson VUE's own OnVUE system requirements before test day rather than relying on older instructions written for the previous provider.
- In person, at a Pearson VUE test center — locate a current center through Pearson VUE's own test center locator, since Pearson's authorized network is separate from the old Kryterion-affiliated centers referenced in older guides.
Once registered, you typically have a limited window (90 days under the current policy) to complete the exam before the registration expires, and registrations aren't refunded if they lapse unused — plan your prep timeline with that in mind.
On passing, you're awarded the CSA certification along with a Credly digital badge you can share on LinkedIn or elsewhere to showcase the credential.

Treat these as supplementary rather than authoritative, since exam content and emphasis shift over time; the official blueprint and ServiceNow's own training materials should remain your primary source of truth.
